Historic Integrity + Contemporary Design
Dave and Teresa Martinelli may have come to Bellingham to be close to their kids, but they stayed for the views. And when they found a historic house on South Hill that overlooked the bay, they knew they’d hit the jackpot. Just one challenge: both the kitchen and the bathroom needed a complete overhaul.
“We talked to a lot of different people, but then we happened to read an article online about A1DesignBuild and how they did a great job blending the historical character of the house with modern upgrades. That’s exactly what we were looking for”
The house was built in 1911, and is a wonderful example of a craftsman. On top of that, Mount Baker’s an hour away and there's practically a million hikes close by, all boxes that needed be checked before they made the commitment to move.
“We stumbled on the South Hill neighborhood and that’s when it all kind of clicked. It’s beautiful.”
Dave and Theresa immediately began working with Sharon Petker, who led the A1 design team for this project. Together, they began dialing in on the budget, the timeline, and all the decisions that needed to be made for success. Things as seemingly insignificant as the number of gang boxes were all defined beforehand.
They also embarked on what’s called a ‘Marathon Day’, where all the subcontractors came in, toured the house, and dialed in on the scope of the remodel. This level of planning was indispensable to make sure things were done right the first time.
“A1 always communicated with us, and kept us in the loop, which was exactly what we wanted. Projects of this size can easily go off track, but we always knew what was happening and when.”
One thing always near the top of the priority list was value. Teresa and Dave were interested in the making the right choices to maintain the integrity of the classic home, while at the same modernizing the interior design and appliances. In all cases, decisions needed to match the soul of a house that had been around for more than a century.
As for the Martinelli’s favorite hike in Whatcom County? That’s truly a difficult question. Maybe Table or Sauk Mountain? Maybe the trail you’re lucky enough to be on?
“We’re very happy with the end result, very happy. I mean, it is really top-notch construction quality. But hopefully we don’t have to do any more construction for a while. (Laughter)”
