The Great Work of the Birchwood Food Desert Fighters

Back in 2016, a terrible thing happened in the Birchwood neighborhood here in Bellingham, WA. The Albertsons grocery store closed, and everyone thought a new grocery store would soon come in and replace it.

But because of a series of things like non-compete clauses and general corporate malfeasance, a new grocery store was prevented from opening in the area - which caused an immediate ‘food desert’ in the neighborhood.

“Food deserts” are defined as urban areas that lack access to affordable or healthy foods, and believe it or not this affects tens of millions of Americans, especially those with low-incomes or limited access to transportation.

But rather than sit idly by, a group of activists got together to help solve the problem here in town. Neighbors, allies, and organizations throughout Bellingham helped, and the Birchwood Food Desert Fighters was born.

How A1DesignBuild is Helping Birchwood Food Desert Fighters Make an Impact

Almost immediately, the change was felt. Community networks formed, and people started growing and sharing food. Legislative and grassroot initiatives were launched, and as of 2024, the non-compete clauses were lifted, allowing for the potential of a new supermarket in the area. But perhaps most importantly, BFDF has hosted Saturday Share Spot, where they have routinely given away 1,000 to 2,000 pounds of food each week to nearly 100 attendees. It’s caring in action.

Even still, food inequities persist. That’s why A1DesignBuild, through our nonprofit A1andALL, has been putting up food pantry boxes throughout the Birchwood Neighborhood. Starting this Monday, February 17th, we will be replacing our older boxes with new ones that are sleek, heavy duty, and more weather resistant. All with the goal of building a stronger community by sharing food and resources with neighbors in need.

To get involved, you can head over to our A1andALL page to learn more about it, and if you’re so inclined, make a small donation. Together, we really can make a difference.
